Postdoc Positions Chemistry Scholarship Research Assistants

The Chemistry Scholarship postdocs will be principal investigator on one of two projects to develop optimization methods for use in Air Traffic Management (ATM). The first project is "Control Route optimization" (SUPEROPT) and will focus on the optimization trajectory adjust according to human control, formulation development and the interface is intuitive to use and interpret. Another project is "Probabilistic-Based ATM Network R & D Operations" (onboard) and will investigate how to incorporate uncertainty in large-scale model of air traffic flow, leading to strong optimization and control the flow of it.

Chemistry Scholarship Both projects are part of the Long Term and Innovative Research (WP E) package of programs (fault) Single European Sky ATM Research. SUPEROPT was led and conducted by the University of Bristol only. Onboard led by GMV and cooperate with SkySoft-ATM. Both projects will involve collaboration with EUROCONTROL and fault.

Chemistry Scholarship Basic research activities in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Bristol University, supervised by Dr. Arthur Richards. Bristol is the heart of the UK aerospace industry and the Ministry of the world's leading research in a variety of relevant topics, including controls and dynamics, fluid dynamics and advanced composites. In particular, postdocs will work in groups researching advanced control and space planning methods, including autonomy and control for spacecraft, aircraft without crew and air traffic.

Qualification

Chemistry Scholarship Successful candidates must be educated to PhD level or equivalent, with a strong background in numerical modeling and optimization.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join a new group at the Gray Institute headed by Dr Anderson Ryan.

Recent research has seen an explosion in our understanding of how certain somatic mutations drive lung cancer growth and development in man. The primary goal of this group is to investigate these molecular changes in human lung cancer in order to understand how they may affect outcomes to radiation therapy, chemotherapy and novel therapies with the aim of improving clinical outcomes for patients with this devastating disease.

The postholder will develop in vivo models of lung cancer in order to investigate the impact of novel and established therapies on tumour development and growth.

The successful candidate should have a PhD/DPhil in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related Biomedical science and practical experience of working with in vivo models of disease preferably cancer (although experience in other disease settings will also be considered). Though not a prerequisite, some familiarity with immunohistochemical techniques is desirable.

This is a full-time post and is offered for three years in the first instance.

Higher Education Chemistry Scholarship for Poverty Alleviation Programme

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is inviting applications from eligible candidates for scholarships for Master Degree studies under the AIT-Sida Scholarship Programme: Higher Education for Poverty Alleviation

The Sida scholarship programme has the specific purpose of reducing poverty. It is designed to result in outcomes of more people with better qualifications and more motivation to address poverty in the region. This will in turn result in better conceived and implemented poverty initiatives providing direct benefits to the poor.

This scholarship is applied for all master programs available at AIT in Bangkok, Thailand (please refer to www.ait.ac.th for more details) which normally last for 22 months in Bangkok and will begin in August 2011 and January 2012.

Eligibility and selection criteria

To achieve this, the following criteria and requirements apply to the students supported by the programme.

The focus of the scholarship cooperation is on poverty alleviation. Thus, in addition to the normal academic qualifications required for AIT (cumulative grade point average of not less than 2.75) applicants must have work experience in and demonstrate commitment to work on poverty alleviation to be eligible for the support. The applicants need to provide a written account of their background and their intentions after graduation with respect to work in poverty alleviation. Successful applicants are also expected to participate in follow up activities after graduation.

For Vietnam, provincial and district level government officers are the primary target group for this programme. Additionally, professionals who work in poverty target areas and show commitment/devotion in poverty alleviation programs can also apply.
Eligible applicants should have:

-A Bachelor’s degree
-At least two years of working experience in poverty reduction programmes
-At least C-level English competency
-Between 25-35 years of age

Objectives of the study to better understand why some cross chest found in the microbial communities and the cross-feeding may contribute to diversity within these communities. Denitrification of nitrate to nitrogen gas is used as a way of fighting style food, which has important implications for water quality, air quality and global warming. Research projects should improve our understanding of how microbial communities assemble.
doctoral research will focus on experimental work, but may include theoretical elements. Projects include the development of experimental skills in the field of microbiology, microbial ecology and evolution of microbial populations. Both positions will begin January 1, 2011, but this is to some extent, negotiable.

VLIR-UOS Scholarships - Belgium :
Beasiswa Scholarships : VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a master or training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students and 70 scholarships to training participants.

All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).

The target group for master programmes comprises students from developing countries. Training programmes are tailored to people from developing countries with a certain degree of professional experience.

Although these programmes are primarily oriented towards students and professionals from developing countries, they are also open to other people.

Applicants applying for both academic admission and a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria.
Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship simply need to fulfill only the admission requirements of the host university running the programme.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection, but the most important academic selection criteria are relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the developing country. 1. Design possibilities of recycled, anodised aluminium used in a textile context

This research proposes to explore innovative, aesthetic and utilitarian ways of using aluminium, in a textile context, through weaving, knitting or coating techniques.

The project will be focused on combining aluminium, in various forms, with sustainable yarns. Aluminium is a light, abundantly available material that can be continuously recycled, with very little impact on the environment. It is also conductive, leading to possibilities for SMART and interactive textiles. We would anticipate the successful candidate would explore traditional and unusual textile techniques, using aluminium, to achieve specific design effects and, at all times, addressing minimization of environmental consequences.

2. Sustainable fashion through eco-friendly textile manufacture and coloration

This project proposes a unique approach to the development of sustainable fashion, involving a multidisciplinary team, with a sustainable textile manufacturer (Lenzing) and a fashion design company. The project will be focused on the exploration of Lyocell based fabrics, a cellulosic fibre regenerated from woodpulp obtained from sustainable forestry. In certain forms Lyocell has luxury fabric properties, that to date have been largely un-exploited by designers. We would anticipate the successful candidate would explore traditional and unusual dyeing and printing techniques to achieve specific design effects, at all times addressing minimization of environmental consequences.

3. Textile design inspired by Shetland’s Heritage

An AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award is available, between The School of Textiles and Design, Heriot-Watt University and The Ann Sutton Foundation, Shetland. The research is intended to facilitate the creation of a distinctive range of commercially viable woven textiles inspired by the richness of Shetland’s heritage and traditional archive fabrics located in the various Shetland Museums. The successful applicant will spend approximately ten to twelve months in Shetland and the remaining time of doctoral study based at The School of Textiles and Design, Galashiels. The collaboration provides access to a fully equipped weave studio and relevant resources such as a collection of archive textiles housed in the Shetland Museum, and other collections. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will bring their particular research emphasis based on previous experience ideally with an interest in the study of archival material for the creation of contemporary textile products.

Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia invites scholars whose work focuses on Africa and/or the African Diaspora to apply for a two-year post-doctoral research and teaching fellowship, beginning August 25, 2011 and ending August 24, 2013. This residential fellowship is a two year appointment and carries an annual salary of $45,000 plus benefits.

Eligibility

The competition for the Woodson Institute fellowship is open to qualified candidates without restriction as to citizenship or current residence. Former employees of the University of Virginia may not apply against a deadline which falls within the twelve months immediately following the termination of their University of Virginia employment. Applicants for the post-doctoral fellowship must have been awarded their Ph.D. by the time of application or furnish proof that it will be received prior to June 30, 2010. Post-doctoral applicants must have been awarded their Ph.D. no earlier than 2002.

Please note: Individuals may not apply for the Woodson predoctoral and post-doctoral fellowships at the same time.
Conditions

The post-doctoral fellow must be in residence at the University of Virginia for the duration of the award period, and must agree to teach one course per year in the African-American and African Studies program to be offered in the Fall or the Spring. Woodson fellows are expected to participate in the series of workshops (about twice monthly) and to make at least one formal presentation of their work to the University community.

2) Although candidates may be positioned critically in traditional disciplines, their work must be rigorously interdisciplinary without diminishing intellectual depth.

3) Such work should advance received scholarship in the fields of African American, African, and Afro-Caribbean Studies – its key theories, methods, themes, and problems.

3) We especially seek work that elucidates the trans-continental experiences and discourses related to the social, historical, and cultural construction of people of African descent through both traditional and recent approaches — Pan-Africanism, Afrocentrism, Trans-Atlantic Studies, African Diaspora Studies, critical race theory, and cultural studies.

4) We seek work that advances theories on the construction of race, and race in relation to other social identities – class, gender, sexuality, nationality, disability – as well as that which focuses on refining methods of interdisciplinary scholarship on race.

5) We encourage research in these fields that engage the professions — law, medicine, social work, public policy, education, architecture and planning — in innovative ways.
6) We will favor candidates whose research can be readily adapted for the creation of courses and pedagogies directly pertinent to the Institute’s curriculum in African American and Diasporic studies.

PhD Studentship in Pervasive Computing

The project will seek to develop and prototype new strategies for controlling car cabin environments towards increased comfort and low energy consumption HVACs, based on detailed sensing. Data acquisition, high-level data processing and real-time modelling and control capabilities for wireless sensor networks will be developed, informed by theory, experimentation and simulation.

The project is expected to advance the areas of physiological and environmental measurement and multi-sensor fusion for identification and development of representative comfort models in vehicle cabins. Thus, the project is co-supervised by a human physiology expert from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and bring skills in software development, electronics engineering, embedded systems, ad-hoc networks or wireless communications.

Candidates who can work across the software/hardware development boundaries are most suitable for this project. The successful candidate needs to be willing to work with physiological researchers and gain an understanding of the human response to a variety of environmental stimuli in cabin environments.

It does this by targeted investment that fosters thought leadership through books, films and websites supporting role models - whether they are entrepreneurs or innovative firms - in developing nations and shaping a new discourse in government, the press and the academy around private sector innovation, prosperity and progressive human values.

The SEVEN Fund today published its annual open “Enterprise-based Solutions to Poverty” request for proposals (RFP). The competition will award up to two (2) research grants of no more than $100,000 each. Submission deadline for the Initial Letters of Interest (LOIs) is October 15, 2010.

The aim of SEVEN Fund sponsored research is to challenge the prevailing state of mind in this field. We want to answer the question of whether wealth-creation may be the most effective solution to alleviate poverty. We invest our efforts and resources to find, research, and document examples where entrepreneurial success is shown to have led to poverty alleviation. In the process, we will seek to inspire entrepreneurs in developing countries with advice, investments, role models, and services.

At SEVEN, we believe that enterprise solutions to poverty already exist, but are not sufficiently studied, analyzed, and exhibited as examples. There are specific questions that have no formulated answers – it is our aim to sponsor research to explore and find these answers. For example:

1.What are the most significant qualities of a successful entrepreneur, especially in the uncertain environment of a developing economy?
2.Can entrepreneurship be taught, inspired, and diffused through a society?
3.Could support for the entrepreneurial spirit serve as role models of sustainable solutions to poverty?
4.What is the relationship between prosperity and progressive human values?
5.How can enterprises contribute to making stronger societies?

Evaluation Criteria & Project Eligibility

In this RFP competition, SEVEN will award grants of varying value (no single grant will exceed $100,000 and twelve months) to exceptional research proposals meeting the criteria. Researchers in academic and other institutions may apply for projects up to one year in duration, beginning March 15, 2011. Grant applications will be subject to a competitive process of confidential expert review similar to that employed by similar grant funding agencies.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted electronically through a standard form on our website, and evaluated in a two-part process, as follows:

Initial Proposal - Due October 15, 2010 - Must include:

•A 500-word project summary, explicitly addressing why it is topical, foundational and unconventional;
•A draft budget description not exceeding 200 words, including an approximate total cost over the life of the award and explanation of how funds would be spent;
•A Curriculum Vitae for the Principal Investigator, which MUST be in PDF format, including:
◦Education and employment history;
◦Full publication list.
•Four expert references on the PI or the project team as a whole.

Hach Career Awards to the Second ACP teacher is to be awarded professionals in the field of chemistry as a master of education or certified as a chemistry / science teachers.
